An introduction to Forge of Empires

You start off as a leader of a small tribe. Over time, you develop your small society by researching new technologies, conquering territories and expanding your small village into a mighty metropolis. Each of these actions takes up a certain amount of time, so you should definitely consider what you do very carefully. Finding the right balance between revenue and expenditures is really important to the fame and glory of your city.

The game is roughly divided into different ages, spanning from the Stone Age, where you start off, going through the Bronze and Iron Ages, all the way up to more recent times with the Progressive Era, the Modern Era and finally the Contemporary Era. With each new age you enter, you unlock new buildings.

Though building up a city isn’t all – you can also explore the continent map and enlarge your empire province by province. The map is divided into sections that correspond with whichever age you are in. And if you’re really intrepid, you can discover a whole world beyond the continent map.

There are other players who are also trying to expand and develop their own societies. Your interactions with these other players add lots to the gameplay, and you can trade with them for resources, visit their cities, or even meet them on the battlefield.

Getting Started

As you get started with Forge of Empires, they offer a really handy tutorial which explains how to play Forge of Empires. However, we will go into the basics on how to play Forge of Empires here.

As we previously mentioned, you start off in the Stone Age, and are greeted by Ragu Silvertongue, who is your quest giver. He will help you out and keep you posted on your progress as the game goes on.

On the opening screen, you can also hover your mouse over just about anything there, and it will give you information about it. The bar at the top of the screen tells you your city name, your rank in that current world, the available population, and their happiness. It also details the current era/age and the amount of coins, supplies, medals, diamonds, and forge points you have.

Buildings

The first thing to do is build, build, build. Residential buildings and production buildings will supply you with much-needed income, which in turn will mean you can get the newest buildings and military units. You have to compare the buildings you can build really carefully though – different people have different styles of playing, so there will always be a building that is better suited to you than another. You’ve also got to keep an eye on how happy your citizens are – a happy citizen is a productive citizen, so make sure you’ve got some cultural buildings and decorations available to keep them inspired.

Goods & Resources

Another important element of this game is goods and resources. Resources are obtained from production buildings, and are the main currency between different players. They can also be used for technological improvements. Goods are used to build buildings, unlock technologies, and recruit military forces. You really don’t want to get to a point where you lack the necessary goods or resources to proceed with the game, so make sure you plan ahead and have what you need when you need it!

Research

Every hour, you get another Forge Point. Forge Points are absolutely essential for your empire – you need them to trade, to level up, and most importantly, to carry out research. You can conduct research by investing into technologies that you can find in the research tree. Once the research has been carried out, you’ll have all the advantages of the new technology available to you, and you’ll be able to build something new in your city.

Battles and Maps

Keep a close eye on the continent map to see what sort of neighbors you have. Getting more provinces means you can get more city expansions. You can also decide what to do with your neighbors – will you form an allegiance, or will you conquer them? As the game progresses, the battles become more challenging, however, so make sure you’re ready for this, and that your enemy isn’t stronger than you are!
