Just like other defensive classes like Demoman or heavy, Engineer is good at area denial. Engineers' primary weapon is a shotgun. He mostly depends fully on his sentry guns and other buildings. The Engineer can damage, kill, heal and teleport. His buildings see important and can be game-changing. The engineer is hard countered by other classes like Demoman, Spy, Soldier or the sniper. He can be played offensively, defensively or for support. Well, the engineer already has defensive and supportive capabilities, he also has other ways to shine offensively. The engineer has a subclass called the battle-engineer. This subclass can also be defined as an offensive engineer.

Now, let's talk about the engineer's loadout. The engineer's loadout consists of his shotgun, pistol, his wrench, his construction PDA and his destruction PDA. He has a pretty big loadout. The construction PDA and his wrench are the most integral part of his loadout. The construction and destruction PDA are his contraptions which cannot be replaced. So, let's start with his primary weapon shotgun. His shotgun is pretty decent. If you usually depend on his sentries then you won't use this much. A good player will always utilize his primary while also focusing on his buildings. This gun can be very useful, especially for finishing off enemies. There are many good alternatives for this gun. I would recommend other alternatives like frontier justice, rescue ranger and panic attack. To be honest all of the alternatives for his shotgun are good. Let's now talk about his secondary which is a pistol. This is such an amazing weapon. When you don't have ammo for your shotgun or you haven't built a sentry yet then you can use this pistol to do some chip damage or to finish off enemies from a longer distance. It also has more than 200 ammo so this makes it even better. If you want to then you can replace this pistol with other alternatives like wrangler and short-circuit. These two are the only alternatives anyway. His melee weapon is his wrench. This wrench is very useful. It deals a good amount of damage but it isn't meant for that. Its main purpose is to upgrade and repair buildings. It has alternatives but I would like to stick to the wrench. Now, let's talk about the engineer's most important item. The construction PDA is what allows the engineer to place his buildings. Let's go through all the buildings. Firstly there is the sentry gun. His sentry gun costs 130 metal to build. It has a very high DPS. It doesn't have a very long range though. You can upgrade it to level 3. A level 2 sentry has higher damage output and hitpoints than a level 1 sentry. A level 3 sentry shoots 4 rockets every few seconds while also firing bullets at the same speed. Level 3 sentry also has much more health points. Just like any other building, these can be easily taken down with sappers which also disables them.

The second building at his disposal is his dispenser. This costs 100 metals to build and also can be upgraded to level 3. It replenishes health, ammunition and metal for all the friendly players standing near the dispenser. As you level it up the dispenser will replenish all of them at a much faster rate. Now, let's talk about his teleporters. There are two of them, the entrance and the exit. As their name says they are just teleporters. Both the entrance and the exit cost 50 metal to build. The cool thing about them is that when you upgrade the entrance or exit of the teleporters then the other part will level up as well.
Lastly, there is his destruction PDA also known as the destroy device. It allows him to destroy any of his buildings from anywhere on the map. Since we've talked about his loadout let's learn some essential things about playing engineer. As an engineer, you should place your buildings in a good place. For example, if you place your sentry too near to the control point then it will be easier for the enemies to reach it and destroy it. However, if you put it too far away then it won't be able to shoot its enemies. A sentry should be placed where most of the enemies pass through or where your enemies cant shoot properly. A dispenser should be placed somewhere safe, like behind a sentry gun. Teleporters should be also built as close to you as possible so that you can get out of sticky situations more easily. To be honest that's all I can say. Despite being an engineer main once, I am still nowhere as good as other competitive players.
